Set up Betterness on your Apple Watch

What you need, how to install the watch app from your iPhone, and which permissions it asks for on your first session.

Updated Sep 5, 2026

Betterness on Apple Watch needs an Apple Watch running watchOS 10 or later, paired with an iPhone that has the Betterness iPhone app installed and signed in.

The watch app records your sessions: heart rate, wrist motion, your route and place if you choose, the songs playing around you and any voice notes you add. It then hands the recording to your iPhone, which uploads it to Betterness.

Install the watch app

  1. 1Install the Betterness app on your iPhone and sign in.
  2. 2Open the Watch app on your iPhone and stay on the My Watch tab.
  3. 3Scroll to Available Apps, find Betterness and tap Install.
  4. 4Wait for the icon to appear on your watch, then open it.

Note

If Automatic App Install is on in the Watch app, Betterness installs on your watch by itself when you install the iPhone app, and you can skip the steps above.

Note

The watch app does not run without the Betterness iPhone app installed. It can record a session while your phone is somewhere else, but the phone is needed to upload the recording afterwards.

The watch asks for access the first time you start a session, and only for what that session uses.

  • Health. Read your heart rate and save each session to Apple Health. Asked on your first session.
  • Motion & Fitness. Read how your wrist moves so your coaching can read how you trained. Asked on your first session.
  • Location. Record your place or your route. Asked only if you choose Check in or Track my route on the pre-start page.
  • Microphone. Recognize the music playing nearby, or record a voice note. Asked only if you turn on Recognize music or record a note.

If you declined something, or a toggle is missing, turn it back on here.

  • Motion & Fitness: on your iPhone, open Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Motion & Fitness, and turn on Fitness Tracking.
  • Health: on your iPhone, open Health, then Sharing, then Apps, then Betterness.
  • Location and Microphone: on your watch, open Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Location Services or Microphone.

Start a session

Pick a sport by tap or by voice, set the pre-start options, and press Start.

Updated Sep 5, 2026

The home screen shows the Betterness wordmark at the top and a mic button in the top-left corner. Under them come RECENT, which holds your last sport, then SETTINGS, with Settings and Sensors, then the full sport catalog.

The catalog is grouped so you can scroll to the right area quickly.

  • Court & Racket: Tennis, Padel, Pickleball, Racquetball, Squash, Handball, Basketball, Volleyball (indoor and beach) and Soccer.
  • Cardio & Training: Running, Walking, HIIT, Hyrox, Strength, Cycling, Indoor Cycling, Mountain Biking and more.
  • Water.
  • Mind & Recovery: Breathwork, Sauna, Cold plunge and more.
  • Therapy & Journeys.
  • Music & Culture: Karaoke, Museum Walk and more.
  • Other.

Start by tapping

  1. 1Tap a sport. Its pre-start page opens.
  2. 2Check the options on the page. Nothing is recorded yet.
  3. 3Press the green Start button.

The pre-start page carries these options.

  • Location: No location, Check in or Track my route. Choosing Check in or Track my route asks for Location access the first time.
  • Recognize music: on or off. Turning it on asks for Microphone access the first time.
  • Touch Lock, or Water Lock for water sports.
  • Sensors: All on, or your own picks if you use Pro mode.
  • Wrist: Left or Right.

Note

Nothing starts until you press Start. You can open a sport, change your mind and go back without recording anything.

Start by voice

  1. 1Tap the mic button in the top-left corner of the home screen.
  2. 2Say the name of the sport.
  3. 3Confirm the sport the watch heard.
  4. 4The same pre-start page opens. Check the options and press Start.

After Start, a GET READY screen shows a readiness ring and a 3, 2, 1 countdown. When the data is available it also shows PRIMED, WEATHER and HYDRATE cards.

If Location is set to Check in or Track my route and Betterness knows a venue near you, it asks whether you are playing there before the session begins. See Places, routes and check-in for how that question works.

Your first session also asks for Health and Motion & Fitness access. If you declined, turn them on in your iPhone Settings under Privacy & Security, then Motion & Fitness, then Fitness Tracking, and in the Health app under Sharing, then Apps, then Betterness.

The pages you can swipe between, what each one shows, and how pause and lock behave.

Updated Sep 5, 2026

While a session runs, swipe left and right to move between pages. Which pages appear depends on the sport and the options you chose before Start.

  • Controls: the HOLD TO END pill, plus PAUSE or RESUME, LOCK and LAP.
  • Metrics: elapsed moving time, your heart rate in bpm, and your current effort with its name, such as Easy, Steady, Aerobic, Threshold or Peak.
  • Sport data: for court and gym sports, your heart rate, session time and active calories. For running, walking, cycling and water sports, pace or speed, distance and elevation.
  • Heart rate trend: a live chart of your heart rate through the session.
  • Map: shown when Track my route is on.
  • Music: the songs recognized around you, when Recognize music is on.

On the Metrics page, swipe up and down to move between the metric faces.

Heart rate comes from the watch sensor through Apple Health, so it needs the Health access you allowed on your first session. Keep the watch snug on your wrist and give it a moment after Start while it shows Finding pulse.

Your wrist motion is part of what your coaching reads after the session. It needs Motion & Fitness access. If that toggle is off, turn it on in your iPhone Settings under Privacy & Security, then Motion & Fitness, then Fitness Tracking.

Controls

  1. 1PAUSE stops the moving-time counter. RESUME starts it again.
  2. 2LOCK stops the screen reacting to touches. Turn the Digital Crown to unlock.
  3. 3LAP marks a lap.
  4. 4To finish, press and hold the HOLD TO END pill for 1.5 seconds. See Finish, save and transfer.

Note

Pausing stops moving time only. The total duration in your summary stays wall-clock, with moving time and paused time shown separately, and a grey band marks the pause in your charts.

Touch Lock ignores touches until you turn the Digital Crown. Water Lock, offered for water sports, does the same and also ejects water from the speaker when you unlock.

Places, routes and check-in

Choose whether a session records your place or your route, and confirm the venue Betterness suggests.

Updated Sep 5, 2026

Location is set per session, on the pre-start page, and it defaults to off. The watch asks for Location access only the first time you choose Check in or Track my route.

  • No location: the session records no place and no route.
  • Check in: Betterness records where the session happened and can suggest a venue.
  • Track my route: Betterness records your route as well, shows the Map page during the session, and gives you pace or speed, distance and elevation for outdoor sports.

If access is missing, turn it on from your watch: open Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Location Services.

With Check in or Track my route on, and a venue Betterness knows nearby, the GET READY screen asks whether you are playing there. The question names the venue and offers Yes I'm here, Skip and Change.

Pick a different place

  1. 1Tap Change. A list of nearby places opens, with your own past places first.
  2. 2Tap the right place, or tap Find another place.
  3. 3Type or dictate a name or an address.
  4. 4If nothing matches, you can use the name you typed as the place, or skip.

Note

The venue question times out after 20 seconds if you do not answer, and the session goes on without a check-in. Only that single question times out. The place list and the search never do.

GPS can take a little while to lock, and it needs a clear view of the sky. If the Map page does not show your position yet, give it a moment outdoors. The Map page only appears when Track my route is on.

Music and voice notes

How the watch names the songs around you without storing audio, and how voice notes are recorded and attached to your session.

Updated Sep 5, 2026

Both features use the microphone, so the watch asks for Microphone access the first time you turn on Recognize music or record a voice note. If you declined, open Settings on your watch, then Privacy & Security, then Microphone.

Recognize music is a toggle on the pre-start page. When it is on, the watch listens briefly every so often during the session and names the song playing nearby, with its title, artist and artwork, alongside your heart rate at that moment. The Music page collects these.

Note

Recognition never records or stores audio. The watch only keeps the song it identified and the time it heard it.

If Recognize music was off when you started, the Music page offers Turn on for this session. Tap to listen now on that page makes the watch listen straight away instead of waiting for the next check.

To record a voice note, tap the mic button in the top-left corner during a session and speak. A voice note is recorded audio. It is saved with the session, transferred to your phone with the rest of the recording, then transcribed and attached to the session in Betterness.

Note

Only the notes you choose to record are stored and uploaded. Nothing else the microphone hears leaves the watch.

Finish, save and transfer

End a session, decide whether to keep it, and follow the recording from your watch to your phone and into Betterness.

Updated Sep 5, 2026

Finish a session

  1. 1Swipe to the Controls page.
  2. 2Press and hold the HOLD TO END pill for 1.5 seconds.
  3. 3On the Finish session? sheet, choose Save session, Discard or Keep going.

If the session has under a minute of activity, the sheet reads Under a minute, false start? and offers Discard, Keep session or Keep going.

Caution

Discard asks Are you sure? for a real session. Confirming deletes the recording from the watch and removes the entry from Apple Health. Nothing is sent to your phone or to Betterness.

Save session writes the session to Apple Health and sends the raw recording to your iPhone: motion, heart rate, route, recognized songs and voice notes. Your iPhone then uploads it to Betterness.

Back on the home screen, a Last session card shows the transfer progress as N of M files received by phone. You can close it with the × button, and it closes by itself once your phone has everything.

Tip

Keep the Betterness iPhone app open while the card is showing. The transfer is fastest when both apps are open at the same time.

Sessions still held on the watch are listed under Settings, then Transfers, each with a Send again now button.

Your phone uploads recordings over cellular by default. To wait for Wi-Fi instead, sign in to Betterness on the web, open Settings, then Connected Devices, and turn on Upload watch recordings on Wi-Fi only.

Once uploaded, the session appears in your Activities in Betterness, and the entry saved by the watch sits in Apple Health.

If your watch restarts mid-session

What you see when the watch or the app restarts during a session, what is kept, and what to do.

Updated Sep 5, 2026

If your watch restarts, or the Betterness app is closed while a session is running, the session is not lost.

When you reopen the app it shows a recovery screen that says it is resuming, with the line Restoring your session. Please wait. Leave the app open until it clears.

The session then either continues where it was, or is saved for you if it could not carry on.

Note

A session that could not be restored is still saved safely. You will find it under Settings, then Transfers, where you can send it to your phone with Send again now.

Fixes for missing heart rate, a stuck transfer, a missing Motion & Fitness toggle, GPS, music and venue suggestions.

Updated Sep 5, 2026

Heart rate is missing

  1. 1On your iPhone, open Health, then Sharing, then Apps, then Betterness, and check that heart rate is allowed.
  2. 2Tighten the strap so the watch sits snug against your wrist.
  3. 3Give the sensor a moment after Start. The watch shows Finding pulse while it locks on.

Transfer is stuck or says Phone unavailable

  1. 1Open the Betterness app on your iPhone and on your watch at the same time.
  2. 2On the watch, open Settings, then Transfers.
  3. 3Tap Send again now on the session that is waiting.

The Motion & Fitness toggle is missing

  1. 1On your iPhone, open Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Motion & Fitness.
  2. 2Turn on Fitness Tracking. The Betterness toggle appears underneath it.

GPS is not locking

  1. 1Make sure Location on the pre-start page is set to Track my route. The Map page and the route need it.
  2. 2Wait outdoors with a clear view of the sky. GPS needs a moment to lock.
  3. 3On your watch, check Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Location Services.

A song was not recognized

  1. 1Check that Recognize music is on. If it was off at Start, the Music page offers Turn on for this session.
  2. 2Turn the music up. The watch has to hear it clearly.
  3. 3Open the Music page and use Tap to listen now instead of waiting for the next check.

Your venue was not suggested

  1. 1Set Location on the pre-start page to Check in or Track my route. With No location, the watch never asks.
  2. 2When the question appears, tap Change, then Find another place, and type or dictate the name or address.
  3. 3If nothing matches, use the name you typed as the place.

Apple Watch FAQ

5.9

Apple Watch FAQ

Short answers on the phone, sports, battery, audio, other apps and where your sessions end up.

Updated Sep 5, 2026

Frequently asked questions

Does it work without my phone nearby?

Recording does. You can leave your iPhone behind and the watch records the whole session. The upload needs the phone, so the recording waits on the watch until the two are together again and both apps are open.

Which sports can I record?

More than 60, across seven groups: Court & Racket, Cardio & Training, Water, Mind & Recovery, Therapy & Journeys, Music & Culture and Other.

How much battery does a session use?

A 90-minute session with every sensor on uses roughly 15 to 20 percent on an Apple Watch Ultra. To use less, open Sensors on the home screen, choose Edit sensors myself, and turn off the streams you do not need.

Is audio uploaded?

Music recognition never records or stores audio, so nothing from it is uploaded. Voice notes are recorded audio and are uploaded, but only the notes you choose to record.

Can I use Apple's own exercise app at the same time?

No. watchOS runs one active session at a time, so end one before starting the other.

Where does my data show up?

In Activities in Betterness, once your phone has uploaded the recording, and in Apple Health, where the watch saves each session.
